Termites

Termites are social insects and live in colonies typically found in the ground or in wood. Termites are usually divided into three groups based on the location of their colony: Subterranean, Drywood and Dampwood. The biology and behaviors vary, making proper identification important.

The most common termite in our service area is the Subterranean. The Eastern, Western and Formosan Subterranean varieties of termites pose the highest economic threat to your property. Subterranean termites are more likely to be found in crawlspace wood with high moisture content. Once termites are introduced into your home, visible damage can show up in as soon as a year, depending on the size of the colony. These termites travel through mud tubes across concrete, brick, cement foundations or even wood framing and walls. These tubes can be the first sign of an infestation.

Treatment

What does the government do when it wants to eliminate termites at the White House or the Statue of Liberty? It relies on Sentricon, and with the help of the professionals at HomeMasters Pest Control, you can too.

Sentricon introduces bait into your yard and home that termites can’t resist — and one device is enough to wipe out a typical termite colony. The bait is chemical-free and termites enjoy it more than the wood of your home.

Sentricon bait stations are placed around your home. Worker termites then find the bait and share it with the rest of the colony. The active ingredient prevents termites from maturing through molting, which ultimately results in the elimination of all the termites.

While very effective against termites, the stations are safe for your pets, too.

Signs of Termites:

It’s always best to have a professional inspect your home for termites, but there are signs of potential problems.

  • Swarming — Termites often swarm in warmer weather and after a rain shower to start new colonies. The swarming event can be brief, so even if you do not see flying termites, you are likely to see the discarded wings around window sills, doors, heating vents, bathtubs and sinks after a swarm takes place.
  • Mud tubes — About the size of a pencil, these tubes can be seen on foundation or inside walls.
  • Damaged wood or live insects — Termites eat wood from the inside out, so you won’t see the damage until it is significant. They also avoid light, but they are light-colored and are about the size of a grain of rice.
